The Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship was created in 2013, with the aim of equipping young students with the knowledge required to progress within the community and society. The Centre provides students with a schooling environment that promotes ideas across various disciplinary boundaries, allows for the debating of new ideas, facilitates interaction between senior scholars, and acts as an intellectual home for senior scholars, post-Doctoral fellowship, and postgraduate students.The work done at the Centre is performed in a setting where the outcome is be used to address vital social issues within a multidisciplinary perspective, with key focus on Humanities and Social Sciences.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered): You may be a South African citizen or an international studentYou must be applying to study at the University of Pretoria on a full time basis and have been allocated a 2025 student number OR already registered as a full time studentYou must NOT already hold a Doctoral DegreeYou must have a project research title and the outline for the intended research for the PhD degreeYou must already have an identified Supervisor who will need to provide their input as well on the online applicationYour studies must contribute to the strategic research areas of the Faculty in which you are registered or to which they are applyingYou must have also applied for other external funding sources for the 2025 academic year (you must submit proof of this)You must demonstrate academic potential and be within the first three years of the PhD studies for the 2025 academic yearYou must be committed to completing your studies within the minimum period of three yearsYou must NOT qualify for the UP-Staff WaiverYou must NOT be working more than 12 hours per week if awarded these fundsYou must read and agree to theUP Doctoral Scholarship conditions(.pdf)
