Summary

Canon Collins Trust supports development in Africa by awarding postgraduate scholarships to outstanding individuals from southern Africa. Since 1981 they have awarded over 3000 postgraduate scholarships to southern African scientists, human rights lawyers, civil servants, educationalists, doctors and other professionals, many of which have gone on to become leaders in government, the private sector and civil society. The Mail & Guardian is a South African weekly newspaper and website that focuses on political analysis, investigative reporting, Southern African news, local arts, music and popular culture. It is considered a newspaper of record for South Africa.

The scholarship will provide the following benefits: contribution towards costs for the duration of your studies, a 12-month paid internship at the Mail & Guardian and an opportunity to enhance your networks, and strengthen your academic and leadership skills through organised events.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered): You must reside in South AfricaYou must be a national of a southern African country (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Eswatini, Angola or Mozambique)You must have completed a good Honours degree or will complete an Honours degree by the end of 2022 (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent)You must be applying for a 1 year full-time Masters course or be currently studying a 2 year courseYour course must be in Journalism, Communication or Media StudiesYou must be studying or applying to study at anyuniversityin South AfricaYou must be able to partake in a 12-month paid internship as a Reporter at the Mail & Guardian in 2024Preference is given to applicants with a demonstrated commitment to education or human rights matters in southern Africa (through work experience, volunteerism or as an activist)
