Summary

The Canon Collins Trust has been running scholarship programmes since 1981, for students from southern African countries. The Trust has supported over 4 000 scholars, from 14 countries and today the Trust offers undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for study in South Africa, the UK, Ireland and Malawi. Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje was a South African journalist, translator, writer, intellectual, linguist and politician. He was also a founding member and first General Secretary of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which is now the African National Congress (ANC). There have been many institutions named in his honour, including the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, the Sol Plaatje University, the Sol Plaatje Museum and Library and the Sol Plaatje Educational Trust.

The Scholarship will be awarded to the value of between R20 000 and R100 000, depending on the students circumstances. Masters students will receive funding for up to 2 years and PhD students will receive funding for up to 3 years. Funding will be renewed based on satisfactory academic performance.
