Bursary Application Checklist for South African Students

A bursary application can be lost in the details: one missing attachment, an incorrect academic year, or a form submitted after the closing time may prevent a good candidate from being considered. Use this checklist before every application and adapt it to the funder’s own instructions.

Eligibility checklist

  • I have checked the citizenship, residency, or community requirement.
  • I meet the academic, study-level, and year-of-study requirements.
  • My qualification and institution are included in the official criteria.
  • I understand any household-income, age, disability, or geographic requirement.
  • I have checked whether the bursary requires work-back, service, or other obligations.
  • I have confirmed the closing date on the official application page.

Document checklist

Prepare the documents that are commonly requested, then remove anything the funder does not ask for. Sending unrelated documents can make an application harder to assess.

  • Identity document or birth certificate, if specified;
  • latest school results, academic transcript, or progress report;
  • proof of acceptance, registration, or application at the institution;
  • proof of income for parents, guardians, or the household;
  • an affidavit or official alternative where a required income document is unavailable;
  • proof of residence when required;
  • banking details only when the official instructions request them; and
  • a motivation letter, CV, or reference letter when listed in the requirements.

Use readable file names such as Surname_ID.pdf and Surname_Transcript.pdf. Check that scans are legible, complete, and within the stated upload-size limit.

Form and motivation checklist

  • My name and contact details match my identity document.
  • I selected the correct qualification, institution, and academic year.
  • I answered financial and academic questions consistently.
  • My motivation explains my goals and circumstances with specific examples.
  • I checked spelling, dates, ID numbers, and contact details.
  • I answered every required question rather than leaving unexplained gaps.

Submission checklist

  • I am using the official funder website, portal, or email address.
  • I have checked whether documents need certification or a particular format.
  • I submitted before the deadline in the funder’s stated time zone.
  • I saved the final form, attachments, confirmation page, and reference number.
  • I know how the funder will contact shortlisted applicants.

After submitting

Keep your phone number and email address active, check spam folders, and respond promptly if the funder requests clarification. Do not send money to an individual who promises to secure a bursary. If an opportunity looks suspicious, compare it with the organisation’s official website and contact details.

You can use the deadline calendar to organise closing dates and browse the bursary directory for more opportunities. Treat every listing as a starting point and complete the application using the official source.

One-minute final review

Before submitting, confirm four things: you are eligible, the documents are complete, the motivation is specific, and the application is going to the correct official channel. This short review can make your application clearer and more reliable.
